EMDR is often used to treat trauma and typically PTSD but there has been a growing evidence base of its application to treat many difficulties and it is now widely used in the treatment of other difficulties.
EMDR is somewhat different to traditional talking therapies where one of the main techniques is the application of performing bilateral stimulation (eye movement) where you will follow the therapists fingers from one side to another to process adverse material.
It is important to note that this is not hypnotherapy and you are fully conscious and awake throughout.
CAT stands for Cognitive Analytic Therapy and is an approach which focuses on relational patterns.
CAT is based on the idea that the experiences we have as children and in our early life can influence how we treat ourselves and how we relate to others. This can lead to us falling into repeated patterns of behaving.
A CAT informed approach has a very good and established evidence base and can be used to work with many difficulties. It can provide an individual with an understanding of themselves in the context of their early experiences, identify repeated patterns of thinking, feeling or behaving and learn to find different ways to manage
ACT is an approach which is very action orientated and works on the premise that discomfort is a normal human response.
ACT helps individuals develop a willingness to make space to experience feelings of discomfort whilst working towards taking actions consistent with your values.
The approach is very active and involves a lot of exercises to help you to learn new skills while considering what you really value in your life and committing to action to work toward a values driven life.
CBT is based on the idea that what you think impacts on how you feel (emotionally and physically) and how you behave.
CBT is about defining a goal you want to achieve and then changing one of those things at a time in the hope of breaking the vicious cycles of thinking, feeling and behaviour to help us move forward.
CBT is a very collaborative and active approach where you will learn new ways to think about things and test our new ways of behaving.
